I was thinking today about some of the most famous dogs in history, and the amazing things they’ve done to help humankind — from Rin Tin Tin to Lassie, Jiggs, Air Bud, and more! 1) Lassie

Lassie was famous for her starring role in the 1943 film Lassie Come Home. After the movie, she became one of the first animal celebrities and appeared in a number of other films. She also toured the United States with her owner, appearing in stage shows and public appearances. Lassie was so popular that she even had her own line of merchandise.


2) Snoopy

One of the most popular and recognizable dogs in the world, Snoopy is best known as the lovable beagle in the Peanuts comic strip. He first appeared in 1950 and has been a fan favorite ever since. In addition to his endearing personality, Snoopy is also known for his many adventures, including flying a plane and becoming a World War I flying ace.

3) Petey from The Little Rascals

One of the most famous dogs of all time is Petey from The Little Rascals. As the mascot for Our Gang (later known as The Little Rascals), he appeared in over 100 short films from 1922 to 1938. He was a Pit Bull Terrier and his real name was Pal. He was owned by Harold Lloyd and later by Harry Warner, one of the founders of Warner Bros. Studios. Petey is best known for his circular patch of black fur around his left eye.

4) Rin Tin Tin

Rin Tin Tin was a famous German Shepherd who was found during World War I by an American soldier named Lee Duncan. He was brought to the United States and appeared in 27 Hollywood films. Rin Tin Tin was so popular that he even received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!


5) Toto from The Wizard of Oz

Toto was played by a terrier named Terry and was Judy Garland's favorite on-set companion. He was paid $125 per week, which was more than some of the human actors. After the movie, he retired from showbiz and lived out his days with one of the film's hairdressers.


6) Air Bud

Air Bud is a golden retriever who was originally trained as a sports dog. He could play basketball, football, and soccer. He also had a starring role in the Air Bud movies. Lassie (five sentences): Lassie is a collie who is best known for her starring role in the Lassie TV show. She was also in several movies, including two with Elizabeth Taylor. Benji (three sentences): Benji is a mutt who starred in several movies, including For the Love of Benji and Benji's Back in Town. He's known for being a lovable and heroic dog.

7) Hachiko, who waited 10 years at a train station for his owner who died on his way to the station

Hachiko was an Akita dog who became famous in Japan for his loyalty. Every day, he would accompany his owner to the Shibuya train station and wait for him to return home. One day, his owner died on his way to the station, and Hachiko continued to wait for him there every day for 10 years until he died himself. His story has been made into a movie and a statue was erected in his honor at the train station.


8) Benji

Benji is a crossbreed of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle who became famous for his starring role in 1974 film Benji. He was originally trained by Frank Inn, who also trained Lassie. After the death of his first owner, Benji was adopted by the family of trainer Joe Camp, who went on to produce six Benji films between 1976 and 2004.


9) Hachi

Hachiko was an Akita dog who was born in 1923 in Japan. He is best known for his loyalty to his owner, Professor Hidesaburo Ueno, who he would accompany to and from the Shibuya train station every day. Even after Professor Ueno's death, Hachiko continued to go to the train station every day for nine years until his own death in 1935. His story has been made into several movies and books, and he is considered one of the most loyal dogs of all time.
